OAS / OAX Sound Demo – Tune#2

Here we go with the second tune in our comparison of OAS and OAX playing the same MIDI file. Same as before:

  1. OAS version with the only change being applying normalization to get the volume level up to the same as the OAX versions.
  2. OAX version using the MIDI with the levels set by OAS.
  3. OAX version with minor volume changes to the MIDI file. The biggest change was lowering the level of the strings.

Based on the comments on Tune#1 most folks preferred the sound of the remixed OAX version. Let’s see what folks say this time around. Which is your favorite this time? #1, #2 or #3?

For reference here’s the volume levels in the MIDI file before and after the changes that I made on OAX:

Air_NoMix
Air_NoMix
Air_ReMix
Air_ReMix

After the 1st one I thought this one would have much greater differences, whereas the differences are small, wonder what no.3 will bring.

Well, in my opinion the differences are so small, except for the rhythm accompaniment, it seems that a different drumkit is used and sounds a bit louder, but that is a volume setting. I also think that the choir sounds nicer on the OAS version, but that is a personal opinion and can differ for every person.

John – Good catch. We also found the drums a little louder in the OAX version. We almost turned them down but opted to leave them set at the same volume level used in the OAS recording. There are no changes made to which sound is selected. The differences we all are hearing are based on the way they sound in OAS or OAX.

Overall, we are finding quite a few of the instruments are louder in OAX. As noted, we did turn down the stings quite a bit on this tune for that very reason. (and also why we include the before and after mix screens).

Overall, we are trying to make as few changes as possible but, at times, the levels are so far off you can’t even hear some of the other parts. In those cases, we make slight volume adjustments.

      Tune#3 coming soon.

Hi Curt, that actually speaks for itself of course. the sounds in the OAX organs called by the midi commands are probably sampled in some other way than in the OAS series and with a different volume, so a small remix is normal, it seems to me.
