We have a new OAX Owner via OAS-OAX Upgrade!

Rich is located here in the states and went through the OAS to OAX upgrade process. Not sure how many folks have done that worldwide but I know a couple of people here in the states have taken that path to get to OAX.
Rich just sent us pictures of his new toy. Looks like FUN – Congrats Rich!

Hi Thomas – I can save you the inconvenience and expense of at least one overseas trip! As far as I’m aware there is no facility within the UK for upgrading an OAS instrument to OAX. The service that Wersi Direct offer involves transportation to and from Germany for the upgrade. The upgrade service that Ross refers to in his post is most likely related to updating older OAS instruments with, for example, larger displays and more up to date motherboards.

Is there a possibility that Wersi will allow OAS owners to do the OAS-to-OAX upgrade? Some years ago, I assembled my Delta 500T kit and used it for 8 years without a problem. Surely, the OAX conversion should entail less risk seeing that it is far less complicated and less error-prone. And for those of us in the USA, it might mean increased sales and more exposure of this very excellent product to the public (very few organ lovers know of any choices other than Hammond or Lowery).

I think that is highly unlikely at this point Thomas. Like you I also built a Delta and later a Spectra. Those days are long gone. Some of the U.S. folks that recently went through the upgrade may/may not want to comment on their experience.

From the little I know it was a very painful process and required some rework to get everything working correctly.

      Thomas,
I am one of three USA owners who had their Scalas upgraded to Sonic. I’d say that the upgrade is NOT recommended for amateur installation–kind of like “don’t try this at home”. There are very tight tolerances and quite a bit of shop work involved. Plus, each of the installations had to have additional modifications made to address cooling issues within the cabinet. Ralph Conti of Wersi USA did all three upgrades and I’m not sure he’d want to do another! Wersi Germany was very reluctant to deliver these upgrades to the US in the first place. So to answer your question, the chances that Wersi would allow OAS owners to do their own upgrade would be somewhere between slim and none.

So then, we Wersi lovers in the USA will have to move overseas to continue this love affair or concede to the reality of musical divorce? Is that a fair assessment? If so, what’s left?

Thomas – Granted not the upgrade route you first suggested, and it’s a little pricier, but I purchased my OAX700 through the US Wersi distributor and had it direct shipped to me. It took 9-10 weeks to arrive.

There is a video available on Youtube on the OAS-OAX upgrade:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY9Xra-5DAY&t=203s
I have recently had communication with Claire the trained technician who does the upgrades for Wersi Direct UK as I advised them that I could carry out an upgrade for them in Australia. Claire contacted the Music Store and advised me that it would void the warranty if I carried out the installation. I have not followed this up myself with The Music Store as the kit has never been supplied by Wersi Direct.
I am sure the Music Store would welcome someone to be trained to carry out this work.

I can imagine there would be all sorts of problems if they let Joe Public, without any electronic experience to carry these installations, so in my opinion it would be well left alone.

I double checked the version in my instrument and it is 1.50-01. I tried to install just the Exe file only but after it runs it is looking for the next file of the 3. The only choice on the screen is “Cancel” so it will not install the exe file at all.

Sam – I just tried a few different settings with Wersichord and working fine.

Has anyone else given it a try yet? What did you find? Does it works as you expect or did you run into the same issues as Sam?

        Hi All,

Decided to do a complete rebuild instead of just upgrading, just felt the system needed a new start.

!. Saved presets then anything that I thought might disappear like midi / audio files.
        2. Loaded the 3 files to root of USB.
        3. Did full rebuild – only took 5 minutes.

All seemed to work OK – Midi / audio files had gone – then while using rhythm unit had a complete lockup. Had to do complete power down ( which I should have done before testing ). After that all seems to work fine the Midi / audio files reloaded automatically and work.
Have just gone and tested the Wersichord which I have never used before and all seems fine. Will always do complete rebuild in future upgrades!!

Let me know if you want me to test anything else etc……

        Regards,
        Derek..

Yes I agree – I have not used Wersi chord before.
I have just set up Moonlight Serenade, I have not got noisy sounds but the whole Wersi chord is out of tune and not in harmony. Sounds horrible!

    Mark,

I do like the OAX quite a bit. Plenty of improvements from OAS in sound quality and width on orchestral sounds and the drums are really great. The OX7II is a big improvement from OAS. The CD line drawbars in the OX7 live is wonderful but the sampled preset drawbar sounds have a much fuller warmer sound quality. Wouldn’t it be great if Wersi could do the same with the “Live” Drawbars. A module to process the sound with regular chorus not vibrato chorus would add a lot and make Wersi shine above all other manufacturers. The rotor on the OAS OX7 was terrible but the new rotor is way better. The original CD Line Gala/Spectra had a chorus button and also the drawbars could be placed on 2 selectors and detuned from each other thus adding a doubling full effect. I still have my Gala CD line which also has the OX7UP for CD line installed. The real control panel looks very similar to the virtual control in the OX7II live. The round buttons actually have a second function to set rotor speed, sustain and delay length to any setting you want. I am sure Wersi could do this for OAX, it is a software change that should be implemented. The OAX 800 with all the physical drawbars should be an organ that has superb Drawbar sounds but it is only just average. There is more to drawbar playing than distortion and percussion. The B3 when played in traditional style not rock/jazz percussion has a wonderful sound. Many B3 players use 2 Leslie speakers to get the fuller chorus doubling sound. Why can’t it be done in software Wersi.
I did have a few issues with the system locking up when selecting a different style variation in V 1.5-01 but it seems pretty stable otherwise.
The VB3 is just not really good. Not very wide or full. I did pull the VST out of the group and changed the rotor cabinet to 122 Jazz, sounds much better than the 147 set by Wersi.
I created a great preset with church pipe organ sounds that is really wonderful, played a lot with EQ and the distance setting in the sound/manual edits.

    Regards
    Rich

      Hi Rich,

Glad you are liking it – I am on 1.51 and have not experienced any issues in the hour or so I have been playing it.

How did you change the rotor cabinet? I have not delved that deeply, I have only played with speeds and mike distance etc, but did not know about the ability to change the cabinet.

      Mark,

My completed upgraded organ was delivered on Feb 3, 2018 and it already had 1.51 installed. I wonder how good the early version of 1.51 really is ???

        Hi Rich,

If it is anything like 1.50, the earlier version was better, as a few folk upgraded to 1.50-03 and went back.

What are your first impressions and have you had any difficulties with 1.51 yet?
